What is Literacy?
Literacy is about the ability to think, to communicate, to problem solve, to continually learn and the use technology.
The International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS) defines literacy as “the ability to understand and employ printed information in daily activities at home, at work, and in the community – to achieve one’s goals and to develop one’s knowledge and potential.”
How much do your programs cost?
All of our programming is free, as we are funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
How old do you need to be to register for Literacy West Nipissing Programs?
We offer programming to adults age 18 plus.
How do I register for your programs?
Call our agency at 705-753-0537 to set up a intake appointment with our program coordinator or email coordinator@literacywestnipissing.ca. We offer year round registrations of new learners.
What do I need to bring to my intake appointment?
We require you to bring your SIN (Social Insurance Number) at intake as well as a copy of your transcript from high school if you have one.
I have a learning disability can I attend your programs?
Yes you can.
I have a physical disability, can I still participate in your programming?
Yes you can. Our agency is wheelchair accessible.
How long does intake meeting take?
It can take from 1 hour to 2 hours.
What is involved in the intake assessment?
The intake assessment helps our educators learn what levels you are at in your literacy and numeracy skills. You will do an assessment for reading, writing and math skills. There is also an assessment we do to learn the type of learning style you prefer.
How often do I need to come in person for my learning?
We offer flexible programming that allows you to do remote learning as well as in person or a combination of each. We work around your schedule.
